Fear and anxiety about a disease and what could happen can be overwhelming and cause strong emotions in us. And when it is a pandemic like Covid19 is all the more perplexing and intimidating.  Public health actions, such as social distancing, have only made people feel isolated and lonely. The outbreak of corona virus disease has created a global health crisis. This has completely changed our way of perceiving the world and our everyday lives. Not only the rate of contagion and patterns of transmission threatens our sense of agency, but the safety measures put in place to contain the spread of the virus mainly refraining us from doing what is inherently human, which is to find solace in the company of others, is always depressing.  However, these actions are necessary and inevitable to reduce the spread.

How we respond to stress during the COVID-19 pandemic can depend on our background, our social support from family or friends, our financial situation, our health and emotional background, the community we live in, and many other factors. Within this context of physical threat, social and physical distancing, as well as public alarm, what is more important and significant is making ourselves conscious of the situation.

Keeping this in mind Smart Indian School conducted an awareness program on Coping with Corona: Guidance and Counseling by Dr. Susovana Sujith Nair (Medical Oncology Dept.; Kuwait Cancer Control Centre) to make the students, parents and teachers aware of this pandemic situation. The session commenced in it’s most reverential manner; invoking the blessings of the almighty by a devotional rendering by Irin Maria Joby.

The effective health communication rendered by Dr.Susovana Sujith Nair for one hour was enough to increase the psychological resources and resilience of the heterogeneous community of teachers, parents and students of Smart Indian School. Sustainable preventive measures, curtailing misinformation, reduction of stigma and prejudice, according to Dr.Susovana, are some of the best measures to stay positive during this global health crisis. This scientific awareness program provided the students and parent community of SIS an opportunity to become informed and educated about virology, health and safety. The virtual rendezvous with various queries and clarifications after the chief speaker’s presentation became crucial enough to make the people upgrade their knowledge on this pandemic.

It is becoming crucial for people to have awareness about how this virus spreads especially in times of great anxiety when various conspiracies theories sprout up in response to this health emergency. Mr. Mahesh Iyer; the principal Smart Indian School was being very genuine and compassionate through these words while delivering the closing speech to the session. The whole school expressed their heartfelt gratitude to Dr.Susovana Sujith Nair by presenting to her an E-certificate as a token of love and appreciation.
